He come from a family of farmers from a small village called Mahadevapatnum, which is located a few miles from Bhimavaram, in the fertile rice paddy fields of Godavari basin on the East Coast of South India. His grand father, Gottumukkala Subba Raju, after whom He was named, was one of the first two brothers to get educated from that village; His travelled travelled for 24 hours on a bullock cart to catch the Madras Visakhapatnum Mail (train) to join the first batch of medical students at Andhra Medical College in 1923. His grandfather nurtured and trained him for 7 years during his high school in Bhimavaram. During that period, his uncles, aunts, and cousins provided immense support. His father, Dr. Gottumukkala Rama Krishnam Raju, after whom my son is named, served as a great role model during his medical school years at Andhra Medical College. His wife, Lakshmi, supported His academic endeavors since They got married in 1979. His brother, Ramu, is an obstetrician with special interest in IVF. His son Rama, after graduating from the University of Notre Dame, is currently doing his Masters in Film at the USC School of Film in Film Production.


After graduating from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnum, India (1982) with honors, Raju completed medicine residency at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh (1986) and gastroenterology fellowship at GB Pant Hospital, Delhi University, New Delhi (1989).

Subsequently, Raju had the special privilege of training with Dr. Karna Dev Bardhan, D Phil, FRCP, OBE, in England (1990-93).

The Cleveland Clinic gave him the opportunity to start his career in the the United States and Raju distinguished himself as the best outgoing medicine resident (1995). Subsequently, he completed gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa (1997), and advanced endoscopy training at Harvard Medical School - Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA (1998).

After starting his academic career at the University of Kansas Medical Center (1998-2001) as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Raju joined UTMB as an Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Endoscopy, and Co-Director of Center for Endoscopic Research, Training, and Innovation (CERTAIN) (2001-2006).

In 2006, Raju was promoted to Professor of Medicine with tenure at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas and served as the Director of Endoscopy, Co-Director of Center for Endoscopic Research, Training, and Innovation (CERTAIN) until Dec 31st 2008.

On January 1st 2009, Raju joined the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in the department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.
